Those who pre-ordered the Pixel Fold are eagerly awaiting the foldable smartphone’s launch in another month or so. Now, in a recent podcast, Google has revealed that a second foldable smartphone is in the works, which the company scrapped ahead of its launch.
In the latest episode of the Made by Google Podcast, which discusses the latest Google products, the company admitted that there is a second Pixel Fold model that never really saw the light of day.
The second pixel crease didn’t make it
Speakers in the latest episode included podcast host Rachid Finge and three members of the Google design team. These were Ivy Ross (Vice President and Head of Design for Google Hardware Products), Isabelle Olsson (Head of Industrial Design for Home, Wearables and CMF) and Claude Zellweger (Director of Design).
The heart of the conversation revolved around the manufacture, build and design of the three newest products in Google’s lineup, the Pixel 7a, Pixel Fold and Pixel Tablet.
Speaking about the Pixel Fold and its hinge design, Ivy Ross said, “I’m really proud of the team because we had created another foldable model where we had the discipline to hold back and say, ‘No, that it is.” “Not good enough yet” and we really wait until we feel like we can do something good enough or better than what’s already there. So it’s really a testament that we’re capable of it and recognizing when something isn’t good enough.
Was that the Pixel Flip?
Not much more was revealed about this scrapped model. However, many wondered if this was possibly the Pixel Flip.
The rumors are based on hints of the possibility of a Pixel Flip. During an interview at Google I/O 2023 with Google Pixel product manager George Hwang, he replied that the company was interested in exploring different form factors and technologies, including flip-style design.
The latest revelation about the scrapped foldable phone hints at Google’s efforts to innovate and bring new technologies and designs to the smartphone market.
